Car production robots. Computer-controlled robot arm being used in the production of a Renault Espace car. The robot arm being using a waterjet cutter to cut the openings (such as petrol hatch or, in this case, windows) of the car. The cutter uses a jet of pure water which is fired out of a carbide nozzle (centre left). The pressure is so great that the jet can cut through the 3mm thick steel of the car body. Cutting a car body with a waterjet produces no heat that can damage the metallurgical properties of the steel. This robot arm can precisely cut all the holes of a single Renault Espace car in 2 minutes and 30 seconds. Photographed in Romorantin, France.
