Leonardo, the sociable robot. Leonardo has been designed by a collaboration between the Stan Winston Studio and Professor Cynthia Breazeal, of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Artificial Intelligence (AI) lab. Leonardo follows Professor Breazeal's work with the interactive robot Kismet, which could observe and react to the people around it. It is hoped that Leonardo will be able to do the same, and use its internal computers to learn responses to human actions. Leonardo has 61 degrees of freedom, over half of them in its face, allowing it a wide range of realistic movements and expressions. It has had its fur skin removed here. Photographed in 2003.
