Fridge refuse. Refrigerators and freezers left at a household refuse disposal site to be recycled. The machines will have their compressors, coolant (refrigerant) and polyurethane foam removed before they are crushed and sold for scrap. The coolants and foam may contain chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) chemicals. CFCs are harmful gases that deplete the ozone layer that protects Earth from the harmful UV (ultraviolet) rays in sunlight. CFCs also help to trap heat in the atmosphere (a process called the greenhouse effect). International agreements have banned their use and regulated the disposal of existing CFC sources. Photographed in 2004, in Sechelt, British Columbia, Canada.
