Ellis and Liberty Islands, New York, USA, aerial image. Ellis Island (upper right) was the site of the main immigration port into the USA between 1892 and 1954. In this time it processed over 20 million immigrants. It is now a museum. At lower centre is Liberty Island, on which the Statue of Liberty stands. This statue was given as a gift by France to celebrate the 1876 centenary of US independence. The statue was only completed and unveiled in 1886, however.
