Bridges on the River Tyne. Aerial photograph of four bridges spanning the River Tyne in north east England. The bridges link Gateshead (left) with Newcastle-Upon-Tyne. The green arched bridge is the Tyne Bridge, opened in 1928. It is an example of a compression arch suspended-deck bridge. Behind is the Swing Bridge (red and white), built in the 1870s. Alongside this is the High Level Bridge, a road and rail bridge designed by Robert Stephenson and completed in 1849. The bridge furthest upstream is the Queen Elizabeth II Metro Bridge which carries the Metro train.
