Iron mine. This is an open-cast mine, a mine where the surface material is directly mined, either for the ore it contains, or to access the ore beneath. Iron ore (iron oxide, haematite) can be red in colour, and the red colour of the soil here shows it has a high iron content. This is the iron mine at Mount Newman, in West Australia. It is one of the world's largest iron mines.
