Black hole. Hubble space telescope (HST) optical image of a massive black hole in the centre of the elliptical galaxy NGC 7052. Surrounding the galaxy is a 3,700 light-year (LY) diameter dust disc (brown). The bright spot (white, centre) is light from stars crowded around the black hole due to its powerful gravitational pull. This black hole is about 300 million times the mass of our Sun. The disc rotates 341,000 miles per hour; the dust may come from an ancient galaxy collision. NGC 7052 in the constellation Vulpecula is 191 million LY from Earth. Image by HST Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2; details 50 LY across are seen.
