Ring galaxy. Artwork of a ring galaxy seen from an alien planetary system. The galaxy's ring shape arose from the rare, central face-on collision of this once spiral galaxy with a smaller galaxy. As the two galaxies collided, a shock wave spread outwards, initiating star formation in the spiral galaxy's gas clouds. The ring-shaped impact of the shock wave created this outer ring of stars that gives rise to the name of ring galaxy.
