Active galaxies emit huge amounts of energy from a powerful source, often thought to be a supermassive central black hole. In this case the energy is emitted as jets - streams of plasma (charged particles) ejected at near light-speed from close to the black hole's centre, where matter is torn apart by colossal tidal forces.
