Praxinoscope. Invented by Emile Reynaud in 1879, this nineteenth century novelty item was a precursor to modern cinematography. Praxinoscopes used mirrors, as opposed to slits, and were lit by a shaded candle placed at upper centre (not present). Sixteen sequential pictures are rotated on a revolving drum to give the impression of movement.
