Infantry peering over the top of a trench. US 132nd infantry in a World War I frontline trench in October 1918. The US joined World War I in 1917, providing much needed troops for the allies. Both sides dug trenches to provide shelter from the shelling and machine gun fire which characterised this conflict. Photographed in Forges, France.
