Ants (brown) harvesting treehopper (green) honeydew. Honeydew is a sugary substance excreted by certain insects and their larvae (here, treehoppers; family Membracidae) as they feed on sap from the plant stem. In return for the honeydew the ants protect the insects and their larvae. Photographed in rainforest at an elevation of 900 metres in the Rio Bigal Biological Reserve, near Sumaco National Park, Ecuador.
