Banded iron ore. Banded ore is a metal ore that shows fine layering (banding) that may or may not be deformed by tectonic forces exerted upon the rock. This image shows a polished section (actual size 20 x 30 cm) through such an ore containing mainly iron, occurring in the form of pyrite and haematite.
