Etched columnar grain structure. Spun-cast tube section, etched to reveal a columnar grain structure. Grains are microscopic crystals (crystallites) that together, separated by visible boundaries, make up polycrystalline structures. Etching is carried out on materials such as metals and glasses to reveal details of the structure. This is part of a study carried out at the National Physical Laboratory, Teddington, UK.
