This visit was part of the victory celebrations for the Russo-Japanese War. The Combined Fleet of the Imperial Japanese Navy, commanded by Admiral Togo Heihachiro (1848-1934), destroyed the Russian Baltic Fleet at the Battle of Tsushima in May 1905. The war ended with the Treaty of Portsmouth (5 September 1905). Admiral Togo's reputation as a naval hero in Japan led him to be named the 'Nelson of the East' by Western journalists.
