Military celebrations, Tokyo, Japan. Crowds and trams on a Tokyo street decked with bunting and national, military and naval flags during the celebration of Admiral Togo's visit in October 1905. This visit was part of the victory celebrations for the Russo-Japanese War. The Combined Fleet of the Imperial Japanese Navy, commanded by Admiral Togo Heihachiro (1848-1934), destroyed the Russian Baltic Fleet at the Battle of Tsushima in May 1905. The war ended with the Treaty of Portsmouth (5 September 1905). Admiral Togo's reputation as a naval hero in Japan led him to be named the 'Nelson of the East' by Western journalists.
