Samuel Johnson and Madame de Boufflers at Inner Temple Lane, London, England. English lexicographer and author Samuel Johnson (1709-1784) founded the periodical 'The Rambler' in 1750. This included several celebrated discourses on literature and morals. His most famous work was 'The Dictionary of The English Language' (1755), with 40,000 entries. In 1764, with Sir Joshua Reynolds, he founded The Literary Club. Inner Temple is a professional body for barristers and judges. Madame de Boufflers (1711-1787), a French noblewoman, visited Johnson in 1769. This engraving, by Isaac Cruikshank, was published in 'The Life of Dr Samuel Johnson' (1792).
