Ultrafine fibrous silica crystals of chalcedony make up most agates. The word chalcedony come from the greek word khalkedon, meaning precision stone. They are formed when hot underground volcanic waters cool, depositing silica in fixed layers. These examples were found in South Africa, India and Madagascar.
