Roman villa. Artwork of a Roman villa in southern Europe. The civilisation of Ancient Rome lasted for over 1200 years. It reached its height in the first and second centuries AD when the Roman Empire controlled the entire Mediterranean and was one of the largest empires of the ancient world. A countryside villa centred on a farm estate, as shown here, was called a 'villa rustica'.
