Curiosity rover drilling sample. This first sample taken by the Curiosity rover on Mars is from drilling at the 'John Klein' site. The powdered rock, transferred from the drill to the rover's scoop, has been sieved and portions delivered to the Chemistry and Mineralogy instrument and the Sample Analysis at Mars instrument. The scoop is 4.5 centimetres wide. This grey-green sample is less oxidized than the redder dusts, and has a higher potential to contain ancient organic compounds. The sample is handled by the CHIMRA (Collection and Handling for In-Situ Martian Rock Analysis) device. Image obtained with the Mast Camera (Mastcam) on 20 February 2013.
