Battle of Tepexic. Historical artwork of the Spanish and their indigenous allies (Tlaxcalans) in battle at Tepexic in 1520 during the Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire, in what is now Mexico. This is a copy of panel 37 from the Lienzo de Tlaxcala, a 16th-century pictorial history of the conquest, produced by the Tlaxcalans. The Spanish, led by Hernan Cortes, are mounted on horses. The Tlaxcalan captain Acxotecatl Cocomitzi (with back banner) is at lower centre. This battle isolated the Aztec capital (Tenochtitlan) from its southern provinces. The title is in Nahuatl. Artwork published in 'Homenaje a Cristobal Colon: Antiguedades mexicanas' (1892).
