Vaughan Cornish (1863-1948), British geographer. Cornish studied chemistry at Victoria University of Manchester, graduating in 1888. In 1891 he married Ellen Agnes (1853-1911) and they settled on the Hampshire coast where Cornish began his studies on waves. In 1895, supported financially by his wife, he resigned his job and the couple travelled the world engaging in research. His books include 'Imperial Military Geography' (1920), 'Borderlands of Language in Europe' (1933), 'Ocean Waves and Kindred Geophysical Phenomena' (1934), and 'The Beauties of Scenery' (1943) This photograph is from the Bain News Service.
