Influenza news article, January 1916. The title of this article refers to 'La Grippe', a term used at the time for influenza. Outbreaks of this viral disease often occur during winter, with the young, elderly and immunocompromised particularly at risk. Influenza vaccines were developed in the 1940s and first used in the Second World War. This article was published in 'The Ogden Standard' (Ogden, Utah, USA) on 29 January 1916, during the First World War. Two years later, the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic devastated millions. It occurred in several waves between 1918 and 1920, infected one fifth of the world population and killed between 20 and 50 million.
