Fabric wetting, effects of soap. Soap improves the wetting ability of water (bottom) as it breaks down the water's natural surface tension. The water can penetrate the fabric and diffuse through the fibres. This contrasts with what happens with pure water droplets (top), which rest on the fabric as surface tension prevents them from soaking in.
