Nijhum Dwip (Nijhum island) once known as Char Osman is a small island under Hatiya Upazila in Noakhali district in Bangladesh. There was no settlement on the island until 1970 before which people used to come to the island on seasonal basis. The island was included in the Hatiya constituency in the early 70s. At that time a large number of people from Hatiya, Shahbajpur and Ramgati, losing their lands and homes in riverbank erosion migrated to the island as new settlers. The Forest Department of the government of Bangladesh created mangrove forest on the island and in 2001 declared it as National Park. The main attraction of the park is a herd of about 25,000 spotted dear or Chitra Horin. Nijhum Dwip, Noakhali, Bangladesh. December 10, 2009.
