Fungal meningitis research. Scientist reviewing the results of a test to determine the susceptibility of the Exserohilum rostratum fungus to an antifungal drug, during the 2012 multistate fungal meningitis outbreak investigation. In October 2012, this fungus was identified by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as the pathogen responsible for almost all cases and fatalities in the New England Compounding Center meningitis outbreak, which by 3rd November 2012 had resulted in 40MB4 cases with 29 fatalities.
