Venice and MOSE construction. Satellite image of the city and lagoon of Venice, Italy, during the construction of the MOSE engineering project. North is at top. Venice, the island just above and left of centre, is low lying and prone to flooding. To its right is the Lido inlet with its new MOSE island and breakwater. MOSE (Experimental Electromechanical Module) is a set of underwater tidal barriers raised to block the three lagoon inlets before high tides. The Lido inlet gates were successfully tested in October 2013. MOSE is scheduled for completion in 2016. Image data obtained on 4 September 2013 by the Operational Land Imager (OLI) on the Landsat 8 satellite.
