Yabusame mounted archery at Hachimangu shrine festival. Horseback archery has been a feature of the shrineˇs festival since the early days of the Kamakura period (1192-1333) and this rider wears a samurai costume of the thirteenth century. Yabusame is performed as an act of purity at Shinto shrines.
