Artist's Drive. Road passing the Artist's Drive Formation in Death Valley, Death Valley National Park, California, USA. These volcanic and sedimentary rocks, dating from the Miocene, form a range of mineral colours due to chemical weathering and hydrothermal action. Death Valley, descending to 86 metres below sea level, is about 220 kilometres long and 25 kilometres wide. It has a hot arid climate, and temperatures can exceed 50 degrees Celsius.
