'Saladin' balloon crash. 19th-century illustration of the balloon 'Saladin', lost with balloonist Walter Powell (1842-1881). The balloon had ascended from Bath on 10 December 1881 to allow meteorological observations. In an uncontrolled landing near the sea, the other two crew (Templer and Agg-Gardner) fell from the basket. The balloon then ascended and was swept out to sea. Remains were discovered two years later in north-western Spain. Artwork from 'Aerostation - Aviation' (1911) by French civil engineer Max de Nansouty (1854-1913), part of the 'Les merveilles de la science' series of 1867-1891 by Louis Figuier.
