Pneumatic messaging. Historical illustration of a system of tubes used to transmit messages by pumping air through the tubes. Pneumatic systems were first built to transmit telegraph messages to stock exchanges (London, 1853). This illustration is of part of the pneumatic messaging system in Paris, built between 1866 and 1884. Artwork from 'Electricite' (1911) by Max de Nansouty, part of the 'Les merveilles de la science' series of 1867-1891 by Louis Figuier.
