The first circumnavigation of the globe was completed on September 28, 1924, when two US Army Douglas World Cruisers returned to Washington. Their flight time was 371 hours and 7 minutes, with an average speed of 78 miles per hour over a distance of 26,503 miles. This photograph is from an archive of images dating from the 1860s to the 1920s, collected for 'The Pageant of America: A Pictorial History of the United States' (1925-1929).
