Common iguana, Iguana iguana, found in Tropical South America; this specimen comes from the Caribbean island of Trinidad (1982). They are commonly found in forests along the banks of rivers; and are often present in the sunny upper foliage as much as 20 m above the ground, though juveniles do not climb as high. Older animals feed chiefly on plants, whereas the younger ones prefer small animals. These iguanids grow to a length of about 2. 2 m, and both sexes have permanently visible dewlaps (fold of skin below the throat). The female buries about 30 eggs at a time; the young hatch after more than 2 months.
