False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the petal of a marigold flower. The petals of most flowers are in fact stamens which have switched roles during evolution from sexual organ to advertising agent. Although they appear smooth to the eye, they often reveal fine sculptured detail under the microscope. The fine structure of the petal may be related to the way it reflects light. Magnification: x264 at 35mm size. Original is bw print b765/043.
