Black-and-white ruffed lemur (Varecia variegata). This lemur is endemic to the east coast rainforests of Madagascar where it spends most of its time high in the canopy. It is the largest of the true lemurs, reaching a body length of up to 55 centimetres. It mainly feeds on fruit, but will also take nectar, seeds and leaves. All lemurs are endemic to Madagascar, where they evolved in isolation from other primates after Madagascar became geographically isolated from Africa. Many lemur species are becoming increasingly rare due to habitat destruction. Photographed in Madagascar.
