Pulse rate is a measurement, expressed in beats per minute, of the heart pumping blood through the arteries. An inflatable cuff (grey) around the wrist is connected to a digital electronic device. The cuff is inflated exerting pressure which stops blood flow in the arm. The pressure is released, and the pulse rate (66) is displayed. Measurements for systolic and diastolic blood pressures are also displayed (not shown here), expressed in millimetres of mercury (mm Hg).
