Hydrostatic motor design. 19th-century lithograph showing design drawings and illustrations for a hydrostatic motor for use in air, sea and land transportation. The motor is shown being used on a train (upper right), a ship (right) and a flying machine (left). It is claimed that it is capable of generating up to 100,000 horse power. The inventor is named as J. B. Metivier of Paris, France, and the design is dated to 1867. Hydrostatics is a branch of fluid mechanics, and deals with hydraulics, the use of fluids in engineering applications, including transport. Pressurized liquids can be used for the generation, control, and transmission of power.
