Cooksonia sp. prehistoric plant, computer illustration. This genus of primitive land plant existed around 433 to 393 million years ago, from the middle of the Silurian period until the end of the Early Devonian period. Cooksonia includes the oldest known plant to have a stem with vascular tissue and is therefore a transitional form between the primitive non-vascular bryophytes and vascular plants.
