Ernst von Siemens (1816-92). 1896 illustration of the German engineer Ernst Werner von Siemens. Ernst was the most versatile of four engineer brothers in the von Siemens family. An innovator in telegraphy and insulation, his main achievements were in the design of electrical generators, electric traction and electrolytic systems. Ernst was also the founder of the important Siemens and Halske engineering company.
