Northern Party Antarctic ice cave. View from inside the ice cave inhabited by the Northern Party in the winter of 1912 on Inexpressible Island. They were part of the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), also known as the Terra Nova Expedition. Led by Robert Falcon Scott, a shore party of 33 spent two seasons exploring on and around the Ross Ice Shelf. The Northern Party of six landed in Victoria Land in February 1911. Marooned by pack ice they barely survived the 1912 winter in this ice cave. Forced to return by land, they arrived back in November 1912 to find that Scott and four others had died in March 1912 on their return from the South Pole.
