Eye surgery. 18th-century illustration of surgery on human eyes. At top, a knife piercing the sclera is being used to cut a pupil in the iris where the natural one is closed. The second diagram shows a crooked needle being used to remove a cataract (opaque lens). The diagrams show the optical effects of corneal scarring (lower left) and a cataract (lower right). This artwork is from the fifth edition (1740) of 'The Anatomy of the Human Body' by English surgeon and anatomist William Cheselden (1688-1752). This book was first published in 1713 and was re-issued through 13 editions. It was popular due to being written in English instead of Latin.
