Lactobacillus bacteria, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). These bacteria are a natural non-pathogenic component of the flora of the human intestines and vagina. They produce lactic acid through the fermentation of carbohydrates. This helps to maintain an acidic environment that is hostile to pathogenic (disease-causing) bacteria. Lactobacilli are also found in milk and fermented products such as yoghurts.
