Roman bathhouse. Illustration of the typical layout of a Roman bathhouse and its complex of baths (thermae). The main stages (entered from left to right) were the natatio (swimming pool), the frigidarium (cold room), the tepidarium (warm room), and the caldarium (hot room). Other areas included the palaestra (exercise yard) and dressing areas (apodyterium or vestibule). Some baths also had a sudatorium (steam bath) and a laconicum (dry steam bath or sauna).
