First naming of 'America'. 16th-century book page in which the word 'America' is first used to describe the New World. This page is from 'Cosmographiae introductio' (1507), printed to accompany the globe and world map produced by German cartographer Martin Waldseemuller (c.1470-1520). The name 'America' was proposed in honour of the supposed discoverer of the continent, Amerigo Vespucci. The text is in Latin, and the words referring to America appear in the second paragraph, which translates as: '...a fourth part has been discovered by Amerigo Vespucci [and called] the land of Amerigo, or America [...] after its discoverer...'
