R Leporis variable star (centre, red). This star is a carbon star, with its red appearance due to its atmosphere containing more carbon than oxygen. This gives rise to a 'sooty' atmosphere and a red colour. R Leporis is around 1300 light years from Earth, in the constellation of Lepus. Image obtained on 6 September 2015.
