Net-winged midge (Liponeura sp.) larva. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of hair-like appendages on the larva of a net-winged midge. Midge larvae are aquatic, only leaving the water to hatch into adults. Net-winged midges (family Blephariceridae) are found near fast-flowing streams where the larvae live. The larvae use claws and with suction cups (not seen) to fasten themselves to rocks and other solid objects to avoid being swept away by the current. Magnification: x167, when printed 10 cm wide.
