Formation of bromine in a redox reaction. Hot concentrated sulfuric acid is added to white sodium bromide crystals. The sulphuric acid is reduced to sulphur dioxide (sulfur (IV) oxide) and the bromide ion is oxidised to free bromine. The orange?rown vapour is hydrogen bromide contaminated with the brown colour of bromine.
