'The Orinoco illustrated' (1741), title page. This natural history of the Orinoco River region was written by Jesuit priest Jose Gumilla (1686-1750) who lived in the area for 35 years. The book was written in the 1730s and describes Gumilla's travels in the region in what is now Venezuela and Colombia. He described the customs, food and medicines of the indigenous peoples. This title page names the author and his roles in the Orinoco Mission and as Provincial Superior of New Granada. The symbol of the Jesuits (the Christogram IHS) is at lower centre, with the year of publication of this edition (1741). This edition was published in Madrid by Manuel Fernandez.
