Leprosy, also known as Hansen's disease, is a disfiguring neurological disease caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium leprae. In the 15th century it was incurable and lepers were often outcasts. Care in religious leper houses and hospitals centred on a person's spiritual needs as much as physical needs.
