Mammoth Hot Springs. View of the mineral terraces of the Mammoth Hot Springs, Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, USA. Mineral terraces form at the outflow of geothermal springs. The water is heated under pressure deep underground. This dissolves large amounts of minerals from the surrounding rocks which are then deposited at the surface as the water cools. The white material on the terraces is the mineral travertine (calcium carbonate).
