19th century Illustration of a dog-powered sewing machine. This machine was created by a M. Richards of Paris, who employed a large number of sewing-machines to make military uniforms. It could apparently power four heavy sewing machines, working intermittently. We see the dog at rest maintaining his centre of gravity and excercising no force upon the wheel, but when the box is inclined, the mere weight of the dog is sufficient to turn the wheel, thereby rotating the machine pulley on the right. A basin of water is supplied at the front of the machine to refresh the dog. The French journal Nature said, "This method always arouses grave objections, from the point of view of humanity as well as mechanics."
